CONGRATULATIONS - NORTH EAST WINTER LEAGUE CHAMPIONS 2018-19

Shotley & Benfieldside Tennis Club came out ahead after an epic battle of exhilarating tennis against Boldon Tennis Club, securing a tight victory by just 2 games after drawing 4 sets all. The Final was played in great spirit, and could have gone either way, until Lisa Shaw and Sam Stokoe held on for a 6:4 win in the final set to add to the set won earlier by Lindsay Brown and David Esther. David and Sam took 2 sets in the first round. Congratulations to Boldon too for their superb tennis and a magnificent effort.

The North East Winter League is contested from October to April between 53 teams from Durham, Cleveland and Northumberland and to come out on top against the biggest and best clubs in the region is a fantastic achievement for our Club. Congratulations to our Captain Lisa, Lindsay, David and Sam for the amazing quality of their tennis, and congratulations and thanks also to those other Club members who played for the team through the winter - Silvia Coates, Connor Atess, Alex Kerr, Philip Kennedy and Ross Wilson. A great team effort!

What a great way to start a year which sees the Club fielding 28 teams across all ages and abilities in our local leagues, with strong chances of celebrating several Division-winning teams by the end of the summer.

NEW HEAD COACH APPOINTMENT

We are delighted to announce the appointment of David Esther as our new Head Coach. David brings tremendous experience of running successful coaching programmes for all ages and abilities and we are looking forward to working with him to build a really strong programme.

As well as delivering our regular weekly schedule of sessions for Mini Red, Orange, Green, Junior, Adult and Cardio, David will be introducing performance-group sessions and providing individual tuition for members. David will also be taking tennis out into the Community by delivering coaching in schools and working with Sport Works in providing a special programme of activities for disabled young people in the local area.

Our usual schedule of coaching on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings will resume with the next school term in early September, but in the meantime if you would like to continue through the holidays David is running 'Play and Pay' coaching sessions for Minis, Juniors and Adults at a cost of £5.00 per session on:

Thursdays at 7.00pm for Adults

Saturdays at 10.00am for Under 10's

Saturdays at 11.00am for Over 10's

No need to pre-register for these - just come along. They will run from 2nd August to 1st September.

ACTIVE DURHAM CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARD WINNER

We're delighted to have been selected as the Club of the Year for Derwentside at last weeks Active Durham Sports & Physical Activity Awards ceremony at the Empire Theatre. We now go on to the Durham-wide finals in late January. This award recognises the dramatic changes that have taken place at the Club over the past two years, with substantial investment from a range of supportive organisations allowing us to transform our Club into a site and facilities that are of benefit to the whole community without losing our central purpose as a tennis club.

Thank you and congratulations to everyone who has helped the Club through this process of refurbishment and renewal. We're looking forward to an exciting future!

Now it's scientifically proven - TENNIS IS GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Click for the article in The Times on 30th November 2016 to find out why tennis is the best sport and activity if you want to live a long and healthy life and minimise your risk of dying from heart disease or stroke. The risk is slashed by 56% for tennis, squash and badminton, but by only 41% for swimming and just 36% for aerobics.

So now you know it makes sense - JOIN A TENNIS CLUB NOW!!

Congratulations to our next generation of Tennis Leaders

It's always great to see the enthusiasm of our Juniors for tennis and last week saw a large group of them back up their commitment by taking part in the LTA's Tennis Leaders course. The course covers learning how the Club works and what job roles need to be done to keep clubs alive and successful, how our juniors can play a vital part in that, and also how to actively help and support our coaches to deliver mini-tennis sessions. The first steps to becoming coaches themselves, in fact!

Congratulations to all our Juniors who received their Certificates (and tee shirts!) for successfully completing the course:

Chloe Dale, Lorna Heafield, Lily Mathison, Adam Parker, Ben Richardson, Evie Rudge, Jessica Symm, James Tatton
