Vets Ladies I home v Boldon II 6th Aug 2018

Lisa (capt.) & Silvia        Jackie & Susie

Captain Lisa and her ladies got off to a flying start in their C division fixtures with a comprehensive demolition of a stubborn Boldon side.

Top couple on the night were our number one pair of Silvia & Lisa who took two tough 7-5 sets in round one before coasting to two easy second round sets. Silvia again showing that Sat. coaching is paying huge dividends for her while Lisa displayed an all round game that even put her home grown tomatoes in the shade.

Jackie and Susie showed real grit to come away with all 4 sets which included a fantastic tiebreak which had the crowd of me on it's feet applauding.

Well played ladies.

Mixed Vets II home v Boldon III 5th Aug 2018

Silvia & Colin      Jackie & Stephen (capt.)

Shotley won by 5 sets to 3 and 43 games to 33

Skipper Stephen's team finally broke a three match run of 4-4 draws to win by 5 sets to 3 in an entertaining match on a sunny Sunday morning.

Named as number one pair Silvia, having a fantastic run of form, and Colin showing why Tynedale were happy to let him play for us settled well together but only managed to halve each round. This left the way for Jackie & Stephen to claim bragging rights as they only dropped a tiebreak set playing some excellent tennis along the way.

Vets Men IV away v Rothbury II 12th July 2018

Eric & Andrew       Rob & Peter

Shotley won by 6 sets to 2 and 39 games to 24

After 3 straight losses capt. Eric led his team to a fully deserved first victory in a sparkling display at Rothbury.

Top couple were Eric & Andrew who won all four sets with the loss of only 6 games while Rob & Peter split each round in a very fine all round team performance.

Well done boys.

Vets Mens IV home v Blyth Ridley 26th July 2018

Kevin & Paul   Andrew & Rob

Shotley won by 7 sets to 1 and by 46 games to 17

With capt. Eric on holiday Andrew took the reins for the teams second win of the season and he and partner Rob took 3 sets.

The stars however were Paul and Kevin who romped through their 4 sets with the loss of only 4 games. Kevin was making an altogether too rare an appearance in a team but showed why he could play at a much higher standard with his excellent court coverage and always present competetive edge. Paul was his usual solid self demonstrating again why he is considered one of the best volleyers at the club.

Ladies I away v Northumberland II 12th July 2018

Jayne & Amy    Lisa & Susie    Yvonne & Jackie

Northumberland won by 17 sets to 1 and 105 games to 19

On a night that started quite brightly with Jayne & Amy taking their first set disaster struck as Amy was injured in the second set and although she completed the set capt. Jayne made the right decision to pull the pair out of the next two rounds. With Lisa and Susie losing two tight sets and Yvonne and Jackie out of their depth while bravely filling in for others the match was over by the second round and Shotley understandably conceded the final six sets without striking a ball,

Get well soon Amy

Mens IV home v Blaydon VI 25th July 2018

Andrew & Rob     Jack & Peter   James & Oran

Blaydon won by 9 sets to 6 and 70 games to 63 with 3 sets not completed.

Skipper Andrew and his team ended the season as they began it with a defeat to Blaydon. This completed the set of losses on a night when Blaydon were beatable but a lack of consistency let the boys down yet again.

The team can however take great credit for never giving up and it has been a fine debut season in Men's tennis for James & Oran while Jack & Peter have showed improvement and they certainly enjoy their tennis. With great contributions from Vets Eric & Rob a first win for capt. Andrew will surely come next season.

Mens II away v Blaydon III 25th July 2018

Alex & Phillip     Darren & Chris      Joe & Philip

Shotley won by 15 sets to 3 and 104 games to 46

Needing a win to secure the title skipper Stephen headed off to Dubrovnik for the week.

He says he had full confidence in the team, they say he bottled it and if they lost he was well distanced from it.

No need to worry as Shotley swept aside yet another Blaydon team to clinch the league in the style they have shown all season.

Top pair with all six sets were stand-in skipper Alex & the Reverend. They absolutely blitzed the opposition 1-6, 0-6,  0-6, 0-6,  1-6, 1-6 with their most commanding display of the season.

Joe & Philip only lost a tiebreak set and were more in charge than the scores reflect.

After some eye-catching displays for the third team Kid Nichol was rewarded with a place alongside Darren to fill in for the absent Stephen. The pair took a creditable 4 sets and both players showed some of their trademark shots. The Kid scrambling across the baseline to play impossible winners while Darren was his usual imperious best at the net.

Well done to all who played in a great season. Now who's going to pick up the trophy - Stephen or Alex.

Over 55's Mixed away v Stocksfield 22nd July 2018

Jackie & David      Susie & Keith

Match won by Stocksfield 7 sets to 1 and 45 games to 26

With skipper Tony making full use of the extensive senior talent available to him it was a new look team that faced Stocksfield.

Alas it did not go to plan as Shotley crashed to their first defeat after two good wins with only Susie & Keith managing to win our one set.

Mixed Over 55's home v Nothumberland 24th July 2018

Jayne & Tony          Silvia & Peter

Shotley won by 5 sets to 3 and 38 games to 37

A fine performance by our most senior team saw them edge an always close fought match.

Top pair on the night were Jayne & Tony with 3 sets while Silvia & Peter took 2.

The ladies did especially well considering Jayne is carrying ( no not you Tony ) an injury and Silvia, who is having an excellent season, playing with yet another new partner and still triumphing.

Well done team

Ladies II home v Gosforth III 24th July 2018

Yvonne & Michelle      Jackie & Angela     Shannon & Jan

Gosforth won by 13 sets to 0 and 78 games to 47 with 5 sets not completed.

After finally getting a win last week Shannon and her ladies went into the match with some optimism but were beaten by a useful Gosforth squad.

Forget the 13 - 0 score this was much closer than that and in fact with a little luck could have won it. They lost 4 tiebreaks and 6 other sets by a single service break and when time was called at 10:00pm two more tiebreaks were about to start.

A fantastic effort from our girls who deserved so much more.

Mens Over 55's away v David Lloyd S/Land 23rd July 2018

Tony & Peter       John & Paul

David Lloyd won by 7 sets to 1 and 45 games to 20

With fixture congestion and injury capt. Tony  made full use of his squad to ring the changes but it made no difference as they were heavily beaten by a very good team.

Tony and Peter took our 1 set and while the tennis was of a high standard Shotley look well short of being able to challenge in this top tier of over 55's

A tough season ahead.

Ladies II away v Boldon III 19th July 2018

Jan & Shannon             Michelle & Yvonne           Ursula & Jane

Shotley won by 8 sets to 7 and 66 games to 64  with 3 sets not completed

After some tough losses Shannon finally led her team to a well deserved victory at Boldon. It was close and with 3 sets unfinished it could have gone either way but the ladies deservedly got over the line for the sweetest of victories.

All six were stars on the night with Ursula & Jane taking 2 sets with our other pairs taking 3 sets apiece. Jan & Shannon just pipping Michelle & Yvonne to top pair by 3 games

Well done ladies

Mens III home v Blaydon IV 18th July 2018

Chris & David      Peter & Tony   Dennis & Jonny

Shotley won by 12 sets to 6 and 85 games to 60

The curtain came down at the end of a fine season for Skip Davids team with a resounding win against local rivals Blaydon.

The skip made some bold selections as he had to consider being without the services of "sicknote" Vince and he surprised even himself as he confidently named himself and "Kid" Nichol as number one pair. (Would it prove to be the right call - we shall see ) relegating Tony and new partner Peter "Greek God " Toase. ( Peter mate you heard wrong - they actually said on seeing you "Good God") with "Pistol" Jonny paired with Tennis Dennis.

The first round saw Shotley take command as Tony & Peter halved as did Skip & the Kid as they lost a second set tiebreak but pulled ahead as Pistol & Tennis Dennis won  both sets.

As the sun shed its last rays of the day a spectator remarked that a certain pair's footwear were a touch too bright and merely highlighted their shortcomings. He (or was it a she) thought they looked like an aged PJ & Duncan "Getting Ready To Grumble"

Back to the action and the second round where only Pistol & Dennis came up short by losing both sets as Shotley took an 8 - 4 lead and were well in command. The battle for top couple was going to the wire as both the top pairs had 3 sets each but Skip & Kid in front by 5 games.

The last round saw Pistol vent his frustration by finding new ways to clash his raquet down as he and Dennis went down tamely winning only 3 games. Skip and the Kid were now up against Blaydon's top couple while Peter & Tony rattled through 2 sets in double quick time for the loss of only one game. Playing under the lights he himself wired up only 3wks ago the Skip shone but not as brightly as the Kid who rose to the challenge, playing winners from impossible "gets" and chasing anything down to win point after point. The pair won 6-1, 6-3 to make it a comfy 12-6 victory. But who was top couple - now for the maths and supper.

As the Skip bought a round of drinks for his team the scores were totted up and after a lot of persuasion Peter finally conceded that unless you are on Pointless then +19 is better than +17 thus making Skip and the Kid top pair by 2 games - fully justifying the pairings.

Of course the beaten pair took the blow manfully, holding back the tears until one of them was renamed "Dorothy" because of his red shoes. What followed was not a pretty sight.

As this was going on Vince helped out by doing the hoovering. First he hoovered the last of the sandwiches and then he hoovered up the last of the apple pies. The one thing he didn't get the chance to clean up was the donuts. With a choice of lemon or custard one of the team couldn't quite decide which he liked best and after polishing off several of each decided he would like more before making his final decision. Alas he had eaten the lot - take a bow "Donut" Dennis.

with 4 wins and 2 losses - a very good season for the boys.

Ladies I home v Cullercoats II 17th July 2018

Lisa & Lyndsey      Jayne & Silvia    Claire & Susie

Cullercoats won by 10 sets to 7 ( 1 set incomplete ) and 74 games to 74

A tough loss to take for our ladies as they suffered a fourth loss on the spin against a very good Cullercoats team.

With Amy still suffering with the back injury which forced her off court in the last match capt. Jayne paired up with Silvia to great effect as they powered their way to 6 sets in fine fashion with the loss of only 10 games.

Susie & Claire took the other set against the away top couple and came close in all but 2 of the other 5 in a great effort.

Finally we come to Lisa & Lyndsey who were playing as number one pair but just couldn't get over the line for a set. They have been a model of consistency all season and they could play a lot worse and win 6 sets. All of the Cullercoats pairs saved their best tennis for the sets against Lisa & Lyndsey, getting everything back with interest, volleying brilliantly and finding an answer to whatever they tried. Having lost 2 tight tiebreaks and 2 very close sets of the 5 they completed our brave pair were understandably frustrated at the end of the night but i'm sure once they get back to knocking some of our men off court on a wed. night they will feel a whole lot better.

A great effort all round ladies  - now go and win at David Lloyd next week

Vets Mens III away v Durham Moor I 15th July 2018

David & Joe           Dennis & John

Durham Moor won by 6 - 2 and 43 games to 32

Without capt. Vince, who is busy working his way through the A to Z of medical complaints ( he is now up to S for Sciatica ) and his partner Tony sitting this one out it was left to the above named to take up the challenge. This they did, with admirable effort, but fell well short in the end as once again old adversary Fred proved the big difference. David and Joe were our top couple taking 2 sets

Vets Ladies II home v David Lloyd S/Land IV 10th July 2018

Yvonne & Michelle        Angela & Kath J

Shotley won by 5 sets to 3  and 40 games to 32

A fine performance from our ladies saw them chalk up their third win a row and with two tough away matches still to come promotion is still possible - keep it going ladies.

Angela & Kath took a crucial set on a tie-break to ease the need for a game count-back but stars on the day were undoubtedly Yvonne & Michelle who only conceded 8 games in winning all 4 sets. A brilliant effort.

Mixed Vets III home v Ponteland II 8th July 2018

Angela & Joe          Joan & John

Shotley won by 6 - 2  and 41 games to 36

Capt. Tony shuffled his pack and brought in "the Dilleys"  to keep the Mr. & Mrs theme running.

Fresh back from warm weather training in Portugal they still managed 2 tight sets and it was especially nice to see the Mr half back on court.

Top pair were "the Pages" who had Angela in fine form again to carry the pair to 4 great sets.

Well done ladies and you boys keep practicing.

Ladies I home v Beverley Park I 5th July 2018

Amy & Silvia        Lisa & Lyndsey     Susie & Jackie

B. Park won by 12 sets to 6 and 89 games to 60

without inspirational capt. Jayne, who was guest rider on the Wall of Death at the Hoppings for the week, our first ladies struggled against a strong B.Park and went down fighting for a second loss in a week.

Top couple on the night were Lisa & Lyndsey with 3 sets, Amy & Silvia took 2 and Susie & Jackie got their reward taking a tie-break.
